What is the difference between a "Program" and a "Course"?

The program is the award that you will gain on completion of the required number of course units. Courses are the individual subjects you will study each term. For example, the Graduate Certificate in Maintenance Management program requires that you complete four course units to receive the award.

Which program should I enrol into?

If you have an undergraduate degree in engineering, technology or applied science you would normally apply for entry to the Graduate Diploma. If you do not have an undergraduate degree you would normally enter at the Graduate Certificate level.

Am I eligible to study this program?

Refer to the 'Who Can Apply?' page.

Can I enrol directly into the Masters Program?

To enroll directly into the Masters Program you must already have completed a CQUniversity Graduate Diploma of Maintenance Management, or equivalent. All other applicants must enter the program at either the Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma levels (depending on your background, qualifications and experience).

How long will it take me to do this program?

You can complete the Graduate Certificate in one or two years, depending on the number of courses you do each Term. You can complete the Graduate Diploma in another one or two years after completion of the Graduate Certificate. You have the option of enrolling in either one course each term or two courses each term.

The suggested weekly study commitment for each course is 10 hours per week. The Masters program requires an additional year after completion of the Graduate Diploma.

Do I have to attend university?

No, the courses are taught externally by distance education. This means you can adjust your study to suit your other commitments. There is a two-day residential school for each course held at the CQUniversity Gladstone campus during the early part of each term. Attendance is not compulsory although highly recommended. Residential schools will expand on the concepts being covered in the courses, provide assistance with assignments, and allow group discussions and syndicate work. They also provide a valuable opportunity to network with other students and staff in the course. Subject to numbers residential schools may also be held in Perth for the Graduate Certificate courses.

Dates for the residential schools can be found on the CQUniversity Handbook site.

What teaching methods are used?

Students receive a study pack for each course before the start of Term, which consists of high quality print based study resources. This package contains:

  • A study guide which leads students through the concepts, readings and activities for each course
  • Resource materials (additional readings, extracts from textbooks, conference papers, etc.)

The courses have been designed so that students can apply the maintenance principles and techniques to their own work situation. Each course is a structured learning module that will guide you through the concepts being covered. Assessment for each course generally consists of two or three assignments. Assessment items are structured so as to allow students the opportunity to gain immediate value from the course material by applying it to workplace situations.

Students are required to have access to a computer as assignments must be submitted in a Word processed format. In addition, each course has an online website that provides further resources and provides the method for the ongoing interaction between students and the lecturer. Assignments can be submitted by post or via the course website. Access to email is required as this is the medium by which students will communicate with the University and also the way that the University will communicate with the student.

Can I get recognition for prior learning (RPL)?

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is called Credit Transfer at CQUniversity. It means being able to apply for credit of previous formal training that is equivalent to a CQUniversity course.

The CQUniversity maintenance management programs have been designed as a cohesive suite of courses that progressively build on each other to develop the essential knowledge and skills required by a maintenance manager. The programs are quite unique, as there are very few university programs in Australia or overseas that offer postgraduate study in the management of maintenance.

As the programs are being offered at the postgraduate level, we already give you credit for your previous training and experience in maintenance management when we enrol you into the program. All students who enrol into the program must have been working in the field of maintenance engineering or maintenance management for a minimum period of time to gain entry (most students who enter the program far exceed this minimum requirement). So, the fact that you may have completed an undergraduate engineering degree or been working for many years in maintenance management is not in itself an adequate reason for gaining credit against the courses in the CQUniversity Maintenance Management program.

We do not give credit for courses in the CQUniversity Maintenance Management programs unless you can provide clear evidence that your prior formal training and extensive additional experience has provided you with learning and experience that encompasses all of the learning outcomes equivalent to a CQUniversity course.

If you believe this is the case, then we can send you an Application for Credit Transfer Kit. However, you will need to apply to enter the CQUniversity Maintenance Management program before we can send you this Kit.
