The principal focus of the Jazz and Popular Music specialization is on musical development through performance. In any given year the jazz and popular music students present performances in a variety of settings including tours, festivals, concerts, and corporate functions. As these are delivered in industry settings students gain valuable performance experience relevant to the real world.
The program has been designed by professional musicians and covers all forms of jazz and popular music but is flexible enough to enable specializations in performance (instrumental or vocal), or composition/arrangement. The curriculum features an integrated approach to concepts of theory, linking each concept with practical experience. While the program contains a balanced approach to both jazz and popular music styles, in many of the practical areas students are able to undertake an emphasis on either genre. Students are expected to be involved in a number and variety of ensembles. These include a big band, a soul band, latin band, jumpin' jive band, blues band and a multitude of small jazz and popular music bands.
The visiting artist program is extensive and the very best are invited to perform and teach. Students have the opportunity to work with many leaders of the various fields, making valuable contacts within the industry. In the jazz area, to date some of the visiting artists have included; James Morrison, Don Burrows, Vince Jones, Don Rader, Kevin Hunt, Jim Kelly, Blaine Whitiker, Emma Pask, Rick Holland (USA), Viv Middleton, Irene Bartlett, Michael Davison (USA), Col Laughnan, Michael Trac ey (USA), Grace Knight, Kerrie Bidell, Graham Jesse, Sharney Russell, Kristin Berardi, Peter Walters, James Greening, Marc Isaacs, James Muller, Brett Hurst, Allan Browne, Paul Hudson, and many others. To date in the popular music area some of the visiting artists have included; Graham Conners, Rickilee Coulter, Karen Knowles, Grace Knight, Courtney & Chris Murphy, Ngaire Joseph and many others.

David Reaston is now playing professionally in Sydney and has released a solo album After Now as well as Home Here with the band dlivr. A new album is due out soon with the Reaston Kay Effect. David is currently employed at the Australian Institute of Music lecturing in contemporary guitar and improvisation. [Graduated 2001]

Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music has a long history is the delivery of high-quality tertiary programs of study in classical piano. The principal focus of the Classical Piano specialization is on musical development through performance. Students will have the opportunity to develop their performance skills through solo work as well as in specialist areas such as accompaniment for voice and instruments, accompaniment for ensembles, and repetiteur work for music theatre. Another focus of this specialisation will be in the area of studio teaching. Students will develop important skills in piano pedagogy with particular application to private studio teaching.
The course has been designed by professional musicians and educators enabling students to explore a wide range of genres including many different classical and modern forms of piano repertoire. The curriculum features an integrated approach to concepts of theory, linking each concept with practical experience. Students are expected to be involved in a number and variety of ensembles and accompaniment activities. Students also have the opportunity to study a number of electives that can be taken from anywhere in the university. This allows students to undertake another stream of study that will broaden their employment prospects and future study options.

Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music has a long history in the delivery of high-quality tertiary programs of study in classical voice. The principal focus of the Classical Voice specialisation is on tailor-made progress for individual students through the academic program. There is also a strong focus on performance, with many opportunities for the student of the Classical Voice to perform regularly as a soloist and with other members of the student body. Studio teaching, the development of the ear and its relationship to the voice, along with sight-singing and voice anatomy and physiology are also given importance.
This course has been designed by professional singers and educators, some of whom have had international performing careers. Students will be guided through a wide range of repertoire, with specific tutoring in the major foreign languages required in the classical repertoire, with their teachers in the studio and in regular workshops. Students are expected to be involved in a number and variety of performing situations, including ensemble work.

Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music has a long history is the delivery of high-quality tertiary music programs in distance mode (flexible delivery). The Music Studies specialisation allows students to study a Bachelor of Music degree in a more flexible and innovative way. Imagine being able to attain your goals in music while tailoring your study around the other commitments in your life! The principal focus of the Music Studies specialization is on the development of music skills and knowledge that will benefit you as a creative practitioner or educator. The course has been designed by professional musicians and educators with a view to providing students with a suite of courses that will enhance their creative practice. During the course, students will be able to pursue their creative practice in the special topics and the creative and performing arts project courses. In these courses, students will work independently under the supervision of CQUniversity staff and the program coordinator of the Bachelor of Music degree to develop their particular skills. The learning objectives of these courses are tailored around the particular project. Examples of creative and performing arts projects could be community and work integrated learning projects, ensemble activities, or solo performance development. Each project is managed and approved by the course coordinator and program coordinator. Students also have the opportunity to study a number of electives that can be taken from anywhere in the university. This allows students to undertake another stream of study that will broaden their employment prospects and future study options. The Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE and CQUniversity Noosa offer students the opportunity to study the Diploma of Music Industry (Technical Production)/Bachelor of Music (Creative Music Technology) program. This program offers students access to a university degree after successful completion of one year of TAFE study. Students will commence their second year of study at a university level and within two years graduate degree qualified. This unique degree is ideal for those seriously interested in developing industry relevant skills in music technology. Incorporating traditional live sound recording, this practical-based program also involves creating and performing original works. Committed to traditional music making, all of our creative music technologies students take courses in how to read and write music notation, alongside creating music with new audio technologies. The curriculum features an integrated approach to concepts of theory, linking each concept with practical experience. Creative music technology students have the opportunity to contribute to performances in a variety of settings including tours, festivals, concerts, and corporate functions. As these are delivered in industry settings, students will gain valuable performance experience relevant to their future career and/or interests.

The Diploma of Music Performance/Diploma of Music Industry - Business (combined)/Bachelor of Music (Contemporary) offers students studying at the Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE the opportunity to increase their Diploma to a Degree qualification in just two further years of study. Students qualify for the Bachelors Degree after successful completion of one year of their Diploma. The Bachelors Degree can be completed within two years as students receive credit for prior learning. The principal focus of the Contemporary Music specialisation is on developing skills in music performance, music business and music technologies. Students learn the stagecraft of performance as well as how to analyse, write, arrange, and record music. The curriculum features an integrated approach to concepts of theory, linking concepts with practical experience. Contemporary students have the opportunity to participate in performances presented in a variety of settings, including at concerts, festivals and university and community functions.

Honours degrees, including the Bachelor of Music (Honours), provide you with an invaluable link between pass degrees and research higher degrees. At CQUniversity, we have developed a challenging program that aims to prepare you for either full research Masters or PhD degrees. One of benefits of studying this program at CQUniversity is that we offer a broad range of disciplines, including (but are not limited to) music performance (jazz, contemporary popular music and classical), composition, musicology and music technology. If you choose not to go on to research higher degrees, then this program will still equip you with research skills of a higher order than in the pass level Bachelor of Music as well as an advanced ability for critical thinking and independent learning.
The Honours program consists of 50 per cent (24 units of credit) coursework and 50 percent (24 units of credit) dissertation. Coursework consists of 4 courses or equivalent based on assessment. Details of the assessment and word length of the dissertation will be advised by Program Coordinator. This program is open to students who have completed an undergraduate theatre degree from a recognised higher education institution and who have achieved at least a credit average (grade point average of at least 5.5) in the discipline area in which they intend to study for Honours.
On completing a Bachelor of Music (Honours), you can choose to go in one of many different career directions, including professional musician, private music teacher, audio engineer, arranger, composer, church musician or music researcher. With extra study, you can also become a university lecturer, arts administrator, public relations officer, music marketer, music librarian, music business manager or school music teacher.
