How the Centre Assists Students

The Mathematics Learning Centre is a support unit of CQUniversity. We offer and provide assistance in mathematics and statistics for students of the University irrespective of mode of study.

It is our experience over several years that many students who enrol in a program of study which contain a component of mathematics do have difficulty with the mathematics, especially in first and second year. There are many reasons for this, including:

  • not taking sufficient mathematics units at high school
  • forgetting concepts previously learned. This is particularly relevant to mature aged students
  • unpleasant associations with the learning of mathematics,
  • mathematics is a hierarchical discipline in structure - you need to know the basics before you can progress to higher level mathematics

Services Students

  • establishing whether the student has any knowledge gaps in basic mathematics
  • providing resources to overcome these gaps (go to Preparatory Mathematics for CQUniversity Programs page)
  • providing individual assistance (over and above that provided by the course lecturer) with studies in mathematics
  • providing help with special topics in mathematics and statistics
  • providing guidance to Postgraduate students with the quantitative aspects of their research.
