This checklist is for your self-evaluation before you submit an assessment item. Please check your course profile because the details required may be slightly different. It is important for you to critically appraise your own work and also to proofread carefully.

 |
| parallel constructions (keeping the same tense) |

| acronyms (full citation of terms rather than letter symbols) |
 |
| abbreviations |
 |
| ampersand ('&' in place of the word 'and') |
 |
| conciseness |
 |
| preciseness |
 |
| capitalisation of alphabetical letters where necessary (titles, names, places) |
 |
| discriminatory language |
 |
| spelling, typographical errors |
 |
| punctuation—read your document aloud. Note the places where you pause naturally and punctuate accordingly. |

| grammatical construction—check that sentences are complete units of meaning and not sentence fragments |
 |
| check that your sentences are not too short, lacking in the use of conjunctive words (however, therefore, moreover, alternatively) |

| Is a reference list included? Check that it is written in the correct format. |

| Have you referenced in-text? |
 |
| Does your in-text referencing correspond to your reference list? (Is every reference cited in your reference list able to be located in your text?) |

| Do you have an adequate introduction and conclusion? |
 |
| Does your essay 'flow' in a structured manner? |
 |
| Is there linking between paragraphs? |
 |
| Are your paragraphs well-structured and does each contain one main idea? |
 |
| Are your paragraphs too long/too short? |
 |
| Does everything in your essay support, develop or contribute to the thesis in your introduction? |
 |
| Is every part of the question addressed with every key word mentioned? |
 |
| Is your point of view consistent and without contradiction throughout the essay? |
 |
| Is your writing based on fact or is it subjective? |
 |
