Oral Presentations

The Tutorial Situation

In a tutorial situation, you may be called upon to present your point of view on an issue or topic, or to present your findings from an analytical or practical report. You may be required to report on an individual basis or as part of a group. Preparing for an oral presentation is much like preparing for a written assessment task. For it to be successful, an oral presentation must be carefully planned.

Presenting a point of view on a set question

Your presentation should have:

An introduction that includes:

  • A thesis statement that indicates your point of view on the topic
  • Background information to set the focus for the presentation
  • An outline of how you will deal with your topic.

A body that includes:

  • Evidence to support your thesis/point of view
  • An argument that persuades your audience to your way of thinking.

A conclusion that:

  • Reiterates your point of view
  • Summarises your argument
  • Leaves a strong impression in the minds of your audience.
