What, when:

  • Course evaluations are conducted on all courses in every term throughout the University year.
  • MyPEQ (My Program Experience Questionnaire) is conducted annually.
  • The AGS (Australian Graduate Survey) is completed shortly after students graduate. It comprises the Graduate Destination Survey (GDS) and the Course Experience Questionnaire (CEQ) or Postgraduate Research Experience Questionnaire (PREQ).

Who, how:

  • All students are invited to complete course evaluations, online through Moodle.
  • Students enrolled in an undergraduate program at CQUniversity are invited to participate in the online MyPEQ.
  • Graduates are invited to complete the AGS approximately four months after finishing the requirements for their higher education degree either online or by telephone.

What is involved when students provide feedback on courses and programs?

  • Most of the feedback involves completing confidential online surveys including multiple choice questions and space to comment on matters that are important. This can be either the best aspects of a particular experience, or areas which could be improved.

What happens to the feedback?

  • Responses from the surveys are analysed and regularly reported on individual Moodle course sites, the Office of Learning and Teaching website, and to relevant University and Faculty staff. This ensures that students are aware of the impact their feedback makes, and underlies a process of continuous improvement across the University. In the case of the AGS, data is also sent externally to Graduate Careers Australia.

Why are these surveys important?

  • Student and graduate evaluation is a central component of providing data to guide professional development, course/program review and enhancement and the University's quality assurance process.
  • The opportunity for students and graduates to contribute their feedback is an important aspect of their sense of engagement with the University.

Why should staff encourage participation?

  • Sector-wide research confirms that staff engagement with students and graduates is the most important approach to raise response rates, and therefore to improve data validity.
  • CQUniversity's 2011 Corporate Plan prioritises hearing the student voice and closing the loop with students and graduates.
  • Student feedback-alongside self-review, peer and other input-allows us to make balanced academic judgements regarding course and program enhancement.

How should staff encourage participation?

  • Include information about surveys and their importance at initial engagement with students, e.g. orientation.
  • Encourage student participation in course evaluations through communication within course Moodle sites.
  • Executive Deans and Deans of Schools: use school meetings and events to promote, to faculty staff, the importance of student and graduate participation in program evaluations.
  • Use top-down internal communication to create a culture where participation in surveys is seen as a critical part of the learning and teaching process. This can begin as soon as a new employee enters the University, for example, in the academic staff induction.
  • Continue building that culture by setting examples to reinforce the value of listening, understanding and responding to the voices of our students and graduates.
