The CONNECT Initiative

The CONNECT initiative aims to use both internal and external expertise to enhance learning, making best use of collaborative online technologies to support the engagement and integration of distance and on-campus students across the University. At its core is the notion that "learning is enhanced when it is more like a team effort than a solo race. Sharing one's ideas and responding to others improves thinking and deepens understanding." (Chickering & Ehrmann, 1996). It also aligns with the University's philosophy on inclusion and engagement, through mutually beneficial partnerships.

A number of related activities bring us to a point where we can envisage a university-wide initiative to improve learning and teaching through our online learning management system - i.e. the CONNECT initiative. These activities include:

  • Moodle
  • Distance education
  • Addressing attrition
  • Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Project (HEPPP) funding
  • Senior Leaders' Conference 2011
  • Online experience working group
  • Integrated provision
  • Recognising the needs of our students
  • Involving our teaching scholars and other academic staff
  • Involving our educational developers
