Professor Sharon Bell (LH Martin Institute)
Amid a great deal of discussion and a growing sense of concern around the demographics of the sector the question of where will our future academics will come from is frequently posed. The tendency is to think replacement. Is this the right question? How do we move beyond the reactive processes of replacing ‘people like us' with ‘people like us' for ‘roles like ours'? What trends can we identify that help us to envisage what our future tertiary education organisations will look like? What values will matter? Will our institutions be large and ‘fat' or ‘thin' and nimble, or perhaps both? Who will populate our institutions and how will their relationships be forged? What will be the expectations of our ‘stakeholders' - students, staff, communities and governments of tertiary education leaders? How will we ensure the achievement of diversity that underpins innovation?
This session will explore current tertiary education leadership challenges and raise the questions that might help identify the nature of ‘sustainable' higher education institutions.
