Abstract

This seminar will address academic challenges raised by the use of so-called ‘Web 2.0' forms of authorship, especially blogging, audio and video podcasting, social bookmarking, social networking and wiki-writing forms.

A critical issue impeding academic innovation with Web 2.0 authorship is that academic practices relevant to working with these forms are underdeveloped, for example:

  • Scholarly and scientific writing conventions for paraphrasing and quotation, referencing and citation, originality and attribution are inadequate to working with these forms of authorship.
  • Examples of good assessment designs and feedback practices when using these forms of authorship as part of formal, assessable student learning are scarce.

The seminar will present efforts being made by a working group drawn from three Melbourne universities to improve the academic integrity of Web 2.0 authorship.
